Choosing a sexual health test
STI tests differ in the infections they measure and the sample sites they cover. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are included in several urine and swab options; other infections need their own tests. If symptoms persist after a negative result, seek sexual health advice rather than assuming a larger panel will explain them. Compare the exact infections, specimen and preparation on each product page.
Where you test matters as much as what you test for. Urine or a vaginal swab only tests the genital tract; infections in the throat and rectum usually cause no symptoms and are only found by swabbing those sites. The kits here are organised by site so you can match the test to what you have actually done. Results are private to your portal, packaging is plain, and a doctor explains any positive result and how to get treatment.
- A routine check: chlamydia and gonorrhoeaUrine for men and anyone with a penis; a self-taken vaginal swab for women and anyone with a vagina. Add throat or rectal swabs, or the 3-site kit, if the kind of sex you have had makes them relevant.
- Symptoms: seek sexual health adviceSymptoms or a partner's diagnosis need assessment. Trichomonas and Mycoplasma genitalium testing may be considered for specific questions; routine asymptomatic M. genitalium screening is not recommended.
- A sore: get the sore itself swabbedA swab taken from a sore while it is there is the most reliable test for herpes and syphilis, and a sexual health clinic can do it. Once it heals, blood tests take over.
Before you buy
How soon after sex can I test?
UK practice is to test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea at least two weeks after the exposure you are worried about. Blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis have their own timings, set out on each product page. Testing earlier risks a false negative, so a repeat is advised if you test inside the window.
Is it really private?
Yes. Kits arrive in plain packaging and results are released only to your secure portal. Our privacy policy explains how your information is handled and when it may be shared to provide your care.
What happens if I test positive?
A doctor explains the result and how to get treatment, usually through a sexual health clinic or your GP, and how to let recent partners know. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and syphilis are all treatable.
Can I test if I am under 18?
No. Sexual health tests here are for adults. Under 18s can get free, confidential testing from NHS sexual health services.
Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor before release. Read more about how it works.
