Choosing a women's health test
Women's health questions rarely come from one system. Tiredness can be iron, thyroid or hormones; irregular periods can be PCOS, thyroid or the start of perimenopause. These panels are grouped so the usual suspects can be checked together from one sample, and read side by side by a doctor.
Timing matters more here than anywhere else in the catalogue. Reproductive hormones are best measured on day two to five of a cycle, combined hormonal contraception suppresses them, and a single sample in perimenopause can be misleading because levels swing. Every product page says when to test, and the doctor reads your results with your timing in mind.
- Irregular periods or tiredness: hormones plus thyroidThe Women's Hormone & Thyroid Check takes FSH, LH, prolactin, oestradiol and a full thyroid panel from one finger-prick kit.
- Acne, hair growth, weight: PCOSThe PCOS Essentials Check covers reproductive hormones, blood sugar and cholesterol, which is the first-line set a specialist looks at.
- Menopause symptoms: a conversation may be more usefulIn otherwise healthy people aged 45 or over with typical symptoms, menopause is usually identified without blood tests. Discuss symptoms and medicines with a clinician before ordering a hormone panel.
- Missed a smear: cervical screeningClinician-taken HPV testing with cytology, the same two-part test the NHS uses, for women aged 25 and over.
Before you buy
When in my cycle should I test hormones?
Day two to five, counting the first day of bleeding as day one. If you have no cycle, any day is fine and the doctor reads the result with that in mind.
Can I test while on the pill or coil?
You can, but combined hormonal contraception suppresses FSH, LH and oestradiol, so those results reflect the pill rather than you. Thyroid, iron and vitamin results are unaffected.
Can a blood test confirm the menopause?
Not on its own. Over 45, the menopause is recognised on symptoms. Blood tests help under 45, or when the picture is unclear, and the doctor explains what your pattern suggests.
Is the cervical screen the same as the NHS one?
Yes: a clinician-taken sample tested for high-risk HPV with cytology from the same vial. It does not replace NHS follow-up if you have already been referred for colposcopy.
Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor before release. Read more about how it works.
