Choosing a longevity & prevention test

These are the panels people choose when nothing specific is wrong but they want to know how the basics are working: liver, kidneys, blood sugar, cholesterol, iron, thyroid and the blood count. Most of the common causes of everyday tiredness sit in this list.

The tests build on each other. A Full Blood Count is the starting point. The Core and Comprehensive panels add liver, kidney and cholesterol chemistry. The Well Person panels add thyroid, three-month blood sugar and iron stores, and the Advanced version adds vitamin D. A doctor reads every result as part of the set, because about 1 in 20 healthy people fall just outside any one reference range, and on its own a single number rarely means much.

  1. Start with the question you want answeredA single measurement and a wider panel answer different questions. Persistent tiredness needs clinical assessment; iron, B12 and thyroid tests do not identify every possible cause.
  2. Compare the included measurementsCore, Essential, Comprehensive and Well Person are product names, not interchangeable standards. Read each included list and preparation instructions. A larger marker count is not automatically more useful.
  3. Pick the cholesterol breakdown if heart risk mattersPanels marked with cholesterol report HDL, LDL and non-HDL, which is how a doctor discusses heart risk. The plain versions report total cholesterol only.
  4. Fast if the panel asks you toEight to twelve hours without food gives reliable glucose, triglyceride and iron readings. Book a morning appointment and drink water as normal.

Before you buy

How often should I have a general blood test?

There is no single schedule appropriate for everyone. Whether to test or repeat a test depends on symptoms, medical history, treatment and previous results. Ask your clinician what would be useful rather than assuming an annual panel is needed.

Can I do these at home?

Many of the single tests, such as CRP, vitamin D, ferritin and thyroid, come as finger-prick home kits. The Full Blood Count and the wider chemistry panels need a blood sample taken by a trained clinician at a clinic.

What happens if something is out of range?

The doctor who reviews your results explains what it means and what usually happens next, which is most often a conversation with your own GP. If a result needs urgent attention, a doctor will try to contact you promptly.

Will this find cancer?

No. None of these panels is a cancer screening test. They look at how organs and systems are working. Specific markers such as PSA are available separately and come with their own limits explained.

Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor before release. Read more about how it works.
