What’s included

Included tests listed below

  • PSA (total)

Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a blood test used to look for prostate problems, including prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. A raised level does not necessarily mean cancer: an enlarged prostate, a urine infection, and recent ejaculation, exercise or cycling can all affect the result.

  • Stockholm3 risk score

A single score that combines PSA and other protein markers in the blood, genetic markers and your clinical details to estimate the risk of clinically significant prostate cancer. It is a risk estimate, not a diagnosis, and no individual genetic result is reported.

Overview

One blood draw, two possible outcomes. Your PSA is measured first; if it is 1.5 ng/ml or below you receive that result and nothing more is run, and if it is above 1.5 the full Stockholm3 risk analysis runs automatically on the same sample. It avoids a second appointment for the men who need the fuller test. You pay the full price at checkout whether or not the second-stage analysis runs.

It lets a man have one blood draw and get either a PSA result alone or, if PSA is raised, an automatic risk score without returning for a second appointment. Like the base test it estimates risk and does not diagnose cancer.

Who this is for and who it isn’t

Who it’s for

  • Men aged 45 to 74, the group it is validated for
  • Men aged 45 to 74 wanting a first prostate check with the right next step built in
  • Men who prefer one appointment over two

Who it isn’t for

  • Like the base test, it estimates risk and does not diagnose cancer. It is designed for men aged 45 to 74 who have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer. If you take finasteride or dutasteride, tell us, because the calculation takes them into account.
  • If your PSA is 1.5 ng/ml or below, only the PSA is reported, and you still pay the full price.
  • Anyone with a new, severe or worsening symptom: contact your GP or call NHS 111. A test you buy today is not a substitute for being examined.

Common reasons people choose this test

  • Age 45 to 74 and wanting a first prostate check
  • A family history of prostate cancer
  • Not knowing your PSA and wanting the right next step built in
  • Preferring one appointment over two

These are reasons people choose to test, not signs that something is wrong. A result is one part of a picture your doctor puts together with your history and an examination.

What your result looks like

Every result is shown with the unit and the reference range exactly as the laboratory reported it, with the doctor’s note underneath.

Doctor’s note (example)

PSA is above the threshold for your age. It is not a cancer test: infection, cycling, sex and an enlarged prostate all raise it. It is repeated after six weeks, and if still raised your GP arranges an MRI.

Values above are examples. Your report shows your own results with the laboratory’s units and reference range for your age and sex, reviewed, signed and released by a GMC-registered doctor.

How it works

  1. You book your appointmentA trained clinician takes your sample at one of our London clinics. Nothing to do at home.
  2. The clinician takes your sampleA single clinic blood draw by a trained clinician
  3. The laboratory analyses itYour sample is processed for the measurements included in this test. Lab processing typically takes 10+ working days from receipt of your sample.
  4. A doctor reviews and releases itA GMC-registered doctor reads every result and signs the report before it reaches you.

How to prepare

What we can and can’t tell you

This is a risk score, never a diagnosis. A low score does not rule out prostate cancer and a high score does not mean cancer is present. Your PSA is measured first, and the second test only runs if your PSA is above 1.5 ng/ml. If it is 1.5 or below you will receive a PSA result only, and PSA on its own misses some prostate cancers that matter. You pay the full price either way, whether or not the second test runs. The score is validated only for men aged 45 to 74 with no previous prostate cancer diagnosis, so it is not suitable outside that group. A raised score means a referral to a urologist for further investigation, not treatment. Genetic markers are used inside the calculation but no genetic result is reported back to you.

The reference range beside each result is the laboratory’s own. A result in range is not a clean bill of health and a result outside it is not a diagnosis. Most ranges cover about 95% of healthy people, so about 1 in 20 healthy people fall just outside any one range. No test result replaces an examination or your own doctor’s judgement, and none of these panels is a cancer screening programme.

Read the full note

Stockholm3 gives a risk score, not a result against a normal range. It is a risk estimate, never a diagnosis: a low score does not mean there is no prostate cancer, and a high score does not mean cancer is present. It is validated only for men aged 45 to 74 who have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and it says nothing about other prostate conditions or the rest of your health.

If you have symptoms such as difficulty passing urine, blood in your urine or semen, or bone pain, see your GP rather than waiting for a result.

Frequently asked questions

Why 1.5 ng/ml?

Stockholm3 was designed and validated for men with a PSA above 1.5 ng/ml, so the laboratory only runs it above that level. Below it, you receive your PSA result and the reviewing doctor explains what it means for you.

Is there a price difference?

No. You pay the full price at checkout, whether or not the second-stage analysis runs. If your PSA is 1.5 ng/ml or below, you receive your PSA result and the reviewing doctor's report, and the price is the same.

Should I avoid anything beforehand?

Avoid ejaculation and vigorous cycling for 48 hours, and wait six weeks after a urine infection or a prostate procedure, as for any PSA-based test. If you take high-dose biotin (vitamin B7), tell us, because it can affect the analysis.

How long do results take?

The laboratory typically takes 10+ working days from receiving your sample. This does not include kit delivery, sample collection or return postage. A doctor reviews your results before they are released.

Can I choose a home kit or a clinic?

This test is a clinic blood draw, as it needs a venous sample for accuracy. We arrange a convenient appointment for you.

Is a doctor involved?

Yes. Every result is reviewed by a GMC-registered doctor who signs it off and explains what it means and what to do next.

Is it confidential?

Your results are available through your secure patient portal. Our privacy policy explains how your information is handled and when it may be shared to provide your care.

What happens to my sample and results?

Stockholm3 combines protein markers, genetic markers and your clinical details. Part of the analysis, including the genetic markers, is carried out at a specialist laboratory abroad, which is why results take longer than a standard blood test. A GMC-registered doctor reads the result and signs the report before it is released to your secure portal. The report gives your risk score with the threshold used to guide whether an MRI scan or biopsy is advised, and the doctor's note explains what it means for you. A raised score is a reason to see your GP, who can refer you to a urologist. If a result needs urgent attention, the reviewing doctor is alerted straight away and we contact you by phone the same working day rather than leaving it in the portal for you to find.
